Being from the deserts of New Mexico, Paul and I obviously didn't grow up with much beach time (aside from the trips to Cali and FL). Although we still technically live in the desert - far away from NM - we now live conveniently close to the ocean. This summer, we visited the beach a few times, enjoying every minute of it! We do live a mere 10 minute walk from the water in our city but it takes at least an hour to get to the nearest beach to hang out. There are beaches here in our city but even the locals recommend traveling north or south to cleaner sands, saying "you can swim in our beaches, but your skin will get red bumps." Enough said.
On one of these excursions to a beach in the south, I decided to try my hand at surfing with some friends from Cali who know what's up. I had a blast and couldn't wait to go back. So, last week, Paul and I helped celebrate a friend's birthday by surfin' it up!
We looked so professional in our borrowed wet suits while getting a short lesson from a real professional before hitting the waves, starting out slow as the waves were little and the water shallow. Then, we got braver and joined the more experienced 12-year-olds who were showing us up in the deeper waters. We had a lot more luck with these deeper waves and caught a few ourselves. I've always wanted to skate-board but am painfully clumsy and prone to broken arms. In my mind, surfing is similar but falling into water is less perilous than concrete!
Paul was, of course, great at this sport, standing up on the very first wave he caught! He did really well. We both were able to stand up and ride a few before the wave died or we fell in. And what surfing trip would be complete without a few wipe outs? We definitely had our fair share of those, with salt water headaches and disheveled hair to prove it. Needless to say, we were sore for a few days post-surfing but we both enjoyed it and can't wait to go again!
